New World wine is typically marketed by the type of grapes used in the production of the wine. Old world wines are generally classified by the reigon or manufacturer (e.g., Appellation Beaujolais Controlée or Château Lafite-Rothschild). However, most of the Old World regions specialize in a specific type of grape so it is relatively easy to compare Old World labels to New World ones once you know the grape varietal that predominates a given region.
